RUKIGA

A Community to Community link between the communities of Ickenham, in North West London- with a population of 10,000 people and Rukiga in South West Uganda- with a population of 10,000 families. The two communities are, in many ways worlds apart, but wish to share their experiences, skills and resources for mutual support.

St. Giles' Church, The United Reformed Church and the Community Of Ickenham, are working together with World Vision, as a major partner to improve the quality of life for our friends in Rukiga, through a range of programmes, but we also have much to learn. CLICK Rukiga is a mutual support programme which will last for many years to come.

Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world, the United Kingdom, by comparison is one of the richest.

The average life expectancy in Uganda is 45.7 years. They wish this to become longer. For us it is unthinkable that life expectancy should be so short, given that in the UK thousands more people are living well beyond 80 years.

141 per 1000 children die before their 5th birthday. With support this can change.

Clean water supply and sanitation are lacking.  With support, what we take for granted can be made available to everyone in Rukiga.

Ongoingly we keep the people of Uganda in our prayers. In the month of November the churches in Ickenham are asking people to make a special prayer commitment.

Week 3

Lord, there are many children in Rukiga who are in desparate need of health and educational support.  Health Centres and Schools are being developed to ensure that the children learn and stay healthy.  We know of fifty children in the Rukiga community who are in particular need and for whom help has been particularly asked. Lord help all of us to think hard about what we can do to support these children and whether we as members of our community can alone or with others, sponsor one of these children.  Father support us all on this long and hopeful journey.  Amen
